How it works -- see WalkapediaScreenTour

User-generated walking, hiking, and biking routes site. Users of the site can discover and add routes based on themes and points of interest. Users discover routes by filtering on location, length, points of interest, etc.

Routes consist of:

  • A name
  • A description
  • A set of walking directions and a map
  • A collection of points of interest
  • A unique URL
  • A set of tags
  • Routes are owned by the creator and are immutable
  • Routes can be cloned and then modified

Points of interest consist of:

  • a unique URL
  • a geolocation
  • a description
  • a set of tags
  • assciated photos
The system automatically brings additional context to each route by pulling in the web, e.g.:
  • crime along the route
  • elevation change along the route
  • weather
  • conditions of the route (e.g. slippery, rocky, smooth, paved, ...)

Value - why people will use it

  • Sharing the experiences that happen along the route
  • Don't get lost
  • Promoting points of interest, some of which might be commercial
